The food available in Eindhoven is pretty
simple because take-out doesn’t play the role here it does in the
United States. You may find, however, that as a result, there are
more pre-processed products, such as bagged, chopped veggies, intended
to make it easier to get food on the table without as much hassle. Possibly,
because Dutch refrigerators are so small, there’s not a large frozen
food section.
Food
is purchased at grocery stores and specialty stores: bakeries, butchers,
fish markets, cheese stores, and vegetable stores. We
have found the bakeries to be somewhat wanting, both in the varieties
of breads and their actual taste. Items that look like cakes often
are just a cookie foundation with an excess of whipped cream. Indeed,
the traditional American birthday cake is hard to find here. If
you have kids and your heart is set on real cake with frosting, check
out Bakkerij Ad Pepers on Hoogstraat between Baarsstraat and Hagenkampweg
Zuid, about 1.5 blocks north of the ring.
Restaurants can be average to fantastic,
if you’re willing to
splurge for it. We always attempt to make reservations on the weekend,
even if we just call a few hours beforehand. Be prepared for smokers;
we’ve never found a restaurant with a non-smoking section.
